- 62% of homeowners expect smart technology to be essential in every home within five years
- Energy efficiency, convenience and cost savings are driving adoption
- Most-searched devices include smart dehumidifiers, TVs and robot vacuums
Smart homes are on track to become the new standard, with 62% of homeowners predicting that connected technology will be essential in every household by 2030, according to new research from Redrow.
The premium homebuilder surveyed 1,000 homeowners, revealing that smart technology is no longer a luxury, but a practical tool for everyday life.
Almost a quarter (23%) of respondents believe smart tech will be essential specifically in new builds, while 19% expect core devices (such as heating controls and energy management systems) to become universal across all homes.
Why we’re embracing smart technology
Practical benefits are driving adoption, with energy efficiency and cost savings topping the list (38%), closely followed by:
- Convenience (36%)
- Security and safety (32%)
- Remote monitoring (26%)
- Entertainment and lifestyle (23%)
Other motivations include integration with other tech (15%), accessibility needs (14%) and supporting remote working (13%).
Keeping up with trends (12%) and improving home value (11%) round out the biggest reasons for adopting smart technology.
These motivations are reflected in the devices homeowners are researching online, with searches revealing practical priorities rather than novelty gadgets.
The most-searched smart devices
Smart dehumidifiers are the most in-demand smart device, according to Redrow’s analysis of Google search data, with over 2.1 million searches in the last year.
Other popular devices capturing attention include:
- Smart TVs: 790,900 searches
- Robot vacuums: 729,900 searches
- Smart air purifiers: 669,470 searches
- Smart humidifiers: 655,850 searches
Meanwhile, the fastest-growing searches point to a shift towards practical and integrated technology:
- Smart pet feeders (+55.56%)
- Multiroom speakers (+45.20%)
- Smart sprinklers (+36.54%)
- Smart curtain controllers (+28.77%)
- Smart microwaves (+26.39%)
Elaine Cartwright, Sales Director at Redrow, says: “Homeowners are looking for technology that actively makes life easier, safer and more energy efficient. Smart dehumidifiers, robot vacuums and energy-monitoring systems are leading the way.
“Older homes often require retrofitting, which can slow adoption, so building future-ready properties is key to enabling integrated smart living. Every Redrow home has high speed internet as standard, because this is a defining feature of modern living – along with features like underfloor heating and open-plan living spaces.”
